Marine Group Boat Works is the Pacific Coast’s premier full-service shipyard with locations along the San Diego Bay and in San Jose del Cabo. Servicing superyachts, commercial and government vessels, Marine Group specializes in retrofits, conversions, hull extensions, centerboard service and mechanical repairs. MGBW is proud of the women who make up our industry, especially proud of CFO Laura Machado for being a finalist of SD Business Journal’s CFO of the Year Award.

Laura has been an integral part of the company for the last 23 years and remains a key figure in it’s growth and expansion. Beginning with one shipyard, Marine Group has now expanded to two full-scale boatyards on the San Diego Bay, one shipyard in San Jose del Cabo, and a superyacht marina located in the heart of San Diego. This expansion would not have been possible without Laura’s savvy financial expertise and foresight. A true team player, Laura encourages cross training of all employees and implements this within her own department in order to provide employees personal and professional growth and development.

Procuring new construction contracts is a source of pride for Laura and requires a true team effort. She also continues to implement a new ERP system which has been an exciting challenge in the last year.

Even during the stress of the COVID pandemic, Laura maintained an encouraging and positive attitude that was felt across the company. She continues to encourage her co-worker’s personal and professional growth through extensive cross-training.

Keeping finances and cash flow on track helps facilitate the smooth operation of the company. Implementing weekly reports to the Project Managers helps them to stay on top of their tasks and aids in the overall workflow.

Laura has been a member of Executive Women International for over 7 years and on the board for the last 6 years. She was awarded the Spirit Award in 2019 by the association for her outstanding service to the organization.

Laura continuously facilitates the company’s focus and emphasis on training both company-wide and within her own accounting department.
