MGBW E-News: Robert Chandler Retires After 20 Years, and New Lunch & Learn!

Happy Retirement & Cheers to 20 Years, Robert Chandler!

On Friday, Feb 21, we said a bittersweet farewell to Robert Chandler, New Construction Pipefitting Supervisor who dedicated 20 years of his craft to MGBW and 45 years as a whole to the maritime industry. Chandler began his career in 1979 as a Boiler Technician for the U.S. Military and quickly graduated through a variety of mechanic and welding roles.  He was eventually hired to work at MGBW in 2005. Chandler built the pipefitting department from the ground up using repair and new construction projects to perfect his team and teams’ abilities. They were responsible for installing new piping systems in a majority of the new construction projects including Navy RSC and dive boats, NASSCO tug, Vulcan Barge and Navy workboats as well as countless repair projects over the years.

Chandler’s secret to success within the company is straightforward.

“Be multi-faceted.  Do more than just one trade.  If you don’t understand the task, ask to be shown how. So many of us might make a mistake. But the ones that stand up and say something about it – they’re the valuables ones because it’s easier to fix a problem sooner than later.”

Chandler’s valuable contributions were celebrated within the New Construction department with a pizza party and parting gift. While he plans to lose some weight and get back in shape to kick start his retirement, he left us with these lasting words of advice:

“It’s important to have self-worth but your worth to the company is measured by the work you do.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Chandler, may all your “pipe dreams” come true, and we wish you excellent health and peace in the next journey of your life.
