MGBW Yard Employees Making Waves!

On August 20th, Washington DC Navy’s Programs Executive Office Captain Gregory Mitchell, who manages more than 150 Navy boatbuilding projects all over the world, came to our yard to check on the status of JPB and familiarize himself with MGBW operations.

He carried with him prized Navy Coins that represent the various departments that he oversees, including FMS which manages our Jordan Patrol program and Target Ships which manages our Range Support Vessel program. These were awarded to two individuals that showed proven success in their trades:

Jean Mora, pipefitter

Edwin Bautista, welder

Jean recently celebrated his one-year anniversary with MGBW.  After he was hired as a pipefitter, he blew managers away with the additional skills he brought to the table. He was quickly moved into a lead role on JPB. Jean has since been responsible for progress on the construction of the boat, showing a strong aptitude toward organization and seeing the bigger picture. Jean has been the New Construction team’s “go-to” guy to move progress along and get the job done. MGBW managers describe him as sharp and versatile, working well with the production crew, engineers and supervisors alike.

Edwin’s work ethic and desire to learn a new trade made him stand out as a recipient of one of Captain Mitchell’s Navy coins. Formerly a MGBW entry level painter, he took the initiative to learn and practice welding afterhours. He later applied to be a MGBW welder and was quickly accepted into the welding program. His welding hours can be directly attributed to the construction of both plates in both hulls of the JPB 1 and 2. Edwin was inspired by his brother who also works as a MGBW welder.

We’re thankful to Captain Mitchell for taking time to visit us and for recognizing hardworking and valuable members of our team.

In related news, we’re proud to announce the recent promotion of Karen Gutierrez from Toolroom Attendant in the purchasing/new construction department to AP Clerk in Accounting. MGBW loves to promote from within, so when we noticed her ambition and the initiative she took within her position, she was quickly nominated for the open AP role. Karen will be assisting Accounts Payable Alex Copley with data entry, check requests, scheduling payments and more. Prior to working at MGBW, Karen has worked for notable companies such as Amazon Fresh.

We’re filled with gratitude for the individuals that call MGBW home. We look forward to many more years together and thank you again for your dedication and hard work.
